About Care for Wild Africa

Wild Animals – Rescue, Care, and Rehabilitation

These are the passions that drive Care for Wild Africa!

The efforts of one courageous lady – Petronel Nieuwoudt

Petronel Nieuwoudt started her career in the Endangered Species Protection Unit (a specialised unit of the Police) where she held the rank of captain. In 1999 she left the police service and started The Game Capture School. With more than 20 years of experience in the care and conservation of wild animals, Petronel has now consolidated her efforts to develop a centre in Mpumalanga, South Africa, that is totally devoted to the care and rehabilitation of African wild animals – in all shapes and sizes!

Having run The Game Capture School for ten years, which was the first comprehensive school in South Africa to offer courses that focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of all forms of wildlife capture and care, Petronel formed Care for Wild Africa in the scenic area of Barberton – just outside of Nelspruit in Mpumalanga.

Care, hand rearing, management and capture of infant, injured and/or orphaned animals are the passions that drive Care for Wild Africa! Petronel is one of the few people, throughout the world, that has specialised in the care of orphaned and injured rhinos. The centre has a designated area that is especially built to cater for these magnificent species (Night pen, Day camp, Scale, etc).

EDUCATION

Emerging from her initial passion for caring for wildlife, Petronel saw the need to educate fellow operators in the game capture business. She now offers game-orientated courses that are geared towards capturing, confining and medically attending to all forms of wild animals, as well as the breeding of certain species – roan, sable, buffalo, impala etc. Courses are especially suited to veterinarians, veterinary nurses, farmers and wildlife professionals.

AID

The Care for Wild Africa Rehabilitation Centre’s intent is to rescue orphaned, abandoned, injured and displaced indigenous birds, mammals and reptiles; rehabilitate the animals where we are able to – with the help of Veterinary doctors, their own dedicated team members supported by volunteer workers who assist with the animal husbandry and hospital chores at the centre, and release them back into the wild where it is appropriate.

OPERATION

Care for Wild Africa operates from a beautiful farm set in the heartland of Mpumalanga, South Africa. Here a treatment and care centre has been built where animals are tended until they can be successfully re-introduced back into the wild.

OPPORTUNITY

Volunteers are welcome at Care for Wild Africa! Volunteering is a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime, opportunity to spend time in Africa, caring for Africa’s distressed wild animals and giving back to nature.
